Description

Santolina essential oil is an herbaceous plant, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops of the botanical species Santolina chamaecyparissus L., belonging to the Asteraceae family.

It does not grow more than 3 hands. It has numerous thin and steep stems. The leaves are linear and disappear as one ascends through the top, until leaving a completely bare stretch. The flower heads have all the same flowers, sometimes very hairy and other times very green, almost without hair.

It breeds in the stony hills of the calcareous soils of much of the country, from the coast to altitudes close to 2000 m. It is scarce in Asturias and Galicia.

Santolina essential oil is distilled between June and October.

Benefits

Santolina essential oil is considered appetizing, digestive, antiseptic, expectorant and healing. In fact, the first virtues that were attributed to the flowering tops of the abutment were those of the chamomile, being later when it was observed that it was also vulnerable, emmenagogue and even vermifuge.

It is perfectly indicated for slow digestion, intestinal gas, menstrual pain, bronchitis, asthma, anorexia, and gastrointestinal spasms. In external use, it is used, above all, in infusion for conjunctivitis, inflammation of the eyelids or blepharitis, stomatitis and vaginitis. As always when we have an essence, we must observe due precautions, especially in children, as they are the most susceptible to poisoning.

Several species of santolina grow in our Peninsula. As there is no documentation on the other species, it is possible to think that there could be some toxic, so the collection should be left in the hands of experts.
